Manila, Sept. 11 -- National Security Adviser (NSA) Eduardo Ano on Thursday described as "patently illegal" China's plan to create a nature reserve at Bajo de Masinloc in the West Philippine Sea.

"It is patently illegal as it violates UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea), the final and binding 2016 Arbitral Award, and the 2022 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties," Ano said in a statement.

He added that China's plan is not meant to protect the environment but more of justify Beijing's control over Bajo de Masinloc, a maritime feature that is part of Philippine territory and lies within the country's exclusive economic zone.
