Manila, Feb. 17 -- The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has cited the need to remodel jails into economically productive sites.
This was among the takeaways from the recently concluded ASEAN Regional Correctional Conference (ARCC) 2025, BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. said in a press briefing Monday.
"We are moving away from mega prisons to mega PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone Authority ecozones)," he said.
Catapang said they are considering best practices from Brunei and Thailand to expand home-based detention similar to release on recognizance.
He said developments in technology "like leg anklets" have made it easy to track individuals.
"We may talk about it in the next ARCC in Thailand," he added.
