Manila, Aug. 8 -- The government is set to donate to the public, through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the 720 metric tons of smuggled mackerel that were seized by Bureau of Customs (BOC) and Department of Agriculture (DA) at the Port of Manila earlier this year.
During the inspection of several container vans at the Manila port on Friday, BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno and DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., said the frozen fish was identified by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for potential donation to communities affected by recent tropical cyclones and other natural disasters.
According to the DA chief, the fish cargoes were already tested and found to be fit for human consumption.
