MANILA, April 12 -- Eight communist rebels have surrendered to police units in Central Luzon, the Police Regional Office (PRO) 3 reported on Friday.

In a statement, PRO 3 director Brig. Gen. Jose Hidalgo Jr. said the former rebels surrendered during the period April 4 to 11 and pledged allegiance to the government.

He said the surrender of these insurgents is an outcome of the efforts of the Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (RTF-ELCAC).

The surrenderers include "Ka Jomar" from the Sandatahang Yunit Propaganda (SYP) member under the Josefino Corpuz Command, who turned in a homemade unserviceable .38 caliber revolver with live ammunition; "Ka Ivy" from the Iskwad Primera Platoon Sentral of Bagong Hukbong Bayan (B...
