Manila, April 18 -- Three guerrillas of the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People's Army (CPP-NPA) were killed while a soldier was slightly injured in a clash in Barangay Marcelo, Calatrava town in Negros Occidental on Wednesday afternoon.

Col. Emelito Thaddeus Logan, commander of the 79th Infantry Battalion (79IB), said in a statement on Thursday that he deployed a platoon to the area after residents complained of the NPA's extortion activities.

At about 5:30 p.m., the soldiers engaged at least 12 rebels for about 30 minutes in the vicinity of Sitio Banwa Minatay.

The encounter led to the death of three communist rebels, whose remains were seen in a photo released by the 79IB headquarters based in Sagay City on Thursday.
