Fiji, Sept. 8 -- Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has defended Fiji's decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem, stressing that Fiji's foreign policy is based on neutrality, international law, and a commitment to peace.

"The decision to open our Embassy in Jerusalem was made by the Government of Fiji as a sovereign state, not driven by religious or external pressures. Fiji will always stand for peace, justice, and human dignity," Rabuka said in a statement.

The Government issued the statement after concerns were raised by the Pacific Conference of Churches (PCC) and civil society about Fiji's position on the Israel-Palestine conflict.
