Fiji, Oct. 13 -- Nauruans have voted against a proposal to extend the parliamentary term from three years to four.
In a national referendum held alongside the general election, 4,601 voted "No" while 3,714 voted "Yes", rejecting the constitutional amendment passed earlier this year by Parliament.
The amendment required the support of two-thirds of voters in the referendum to become law.
The question put to voters was: "Do you agree that the term of the Parliament be increased from 3 to 4 years as approved and passed by the Parliament pursuant to the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025?"
With the majority voting against the proposal, Nauru's parliamentary term will remain at three years.
