Incessant rainfall over the past few days in Lamtaput block of Odisha's Koraput district has pushed the Machkund Dam to near-capacity levels, prompting authorities to open two of its sluice gates as a precautionary measure.
According to official sources, this marks the first floodwater inflow of the 2025 monsoon season in the region. The water level in the dam, which has a maximum capacity of 2,590 feet, has now reached 2,588 feet, approaching the danger mark. With more rain predicted, officials have decided to release the excess water.
