Bhubaneswar, July 1 -- March 31, 1865, marked the birth of a trailblazer who went to make history in the field of medicine.We are talking about Anandi Gopal Joshi, the first Indian woman to become a physician in the field of western medicine. She was born in 1865 in Maharashtra and married at the age of 9. After her infant son died due to lack of medical care, she was encouraged by her husband to study medicine.In 1886, she travelled to the United States to study at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania.
