India, Jan. 15 -- The Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Manipur police arrested five cadres from different underground outfits in a series of cordon-and-search operations carried out at their hideouts over the past 36 hours, officials reported on Thursday.

The arrested insurgents, including two teenagers, were accused of being involved in extortion activities in the Imphal West district over the past few weeks, the police said.

In the first phase of the operation, conducted at Mantripukhri Lamlongei Maning Leikai under Heingang Police Station in Imphal East district, three activists of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party - Noyon group (KCP Noyon) were arrested.
