IMPHAL, April 9 -- A team of the Assam Rifles foiled an alleged cross-border smuggling attempt and apprehended seven suspected smugglers in Kamjong, Manipur which shares a border with Myanmar.

Sources said that approximately 1701 cubic feet of timber, valued at Rs 14.45 lakh in the regional grey market was seized during the operation.

The timber was being transported from Myanmar into Manipur through its porous borders, officials said on Tuesday.

The officials added that the security forces during its routine search operation in the region of Z Choro village, intercepted seven trucks bearing Indian registration.

These trucks were allegedly involved in the illegal transportation of timber and all of them lacked valid documentation.
