India, Jan. 14 -- The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) actively works to develop polo in Manipur as a heritage and economic opportunity, with plans for improved infrastructure and international coaching.
This was stated by the Union Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, during a meeting with the Governor of Manipur on Tuesday.
Polo originated in Manipur, India, where it was known as Sagol Kangjei, a traditional horseback game played for centuries. It was later adapted and introduced to the British, who popularized it globally as "polo," with Manipur recognized as the sport's birthplace, according to sources such as the Guinness Book of World Records.
