GUWAHATI, March 11 -- The Assam government has approved introduction of Meitei script in educational institutions across the state.

This move of the Assam government is aimed at safeguarding and promoting linguistic heritage of the Manipuri community in the state.

The initiative seeks to provide interested students with the opportunity to explore Manipuri literature and pursue higher education in the language using the Meitei/Mayek script.

Additionally, it aims to facilitate candidates from Assam seeking employment in Manipur, where knowledge of the Meitei/Mayek script is mandatory for certain jobs.
