Guwahati, June 3 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday launched a suo motu investigation into reports of widespread opposition against a proposed dam in Arunachal Pradesh's Siang district.

The Commission has requested a detailed report on the issue within two weeks, signaling a thorough examination of the concerns raised by the Siang district residents.

The NHRC's action follows a protest on May 23, 2025, in Beging village, led by a prominent human rights activist and Convenor of the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum. Approximately 400 individuals participated in the demonstration, highlighting the community's strong disapproval of the project.
