Guwahati, June 3 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday launched a suo motu investigation into reports of widespread opposition against a proposed dam in Arunachal Pradesh's Siang district.

Residents are reportedly concerned about potential displacement, adverse impacts on livelihoods, and ecological damage.

The NHRC's action follows a protest on May 23, 2025, in Beging village, led by a prominent human rights activist and Convenor of the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum. Approximately 400 individuals participated in the demonstration, highlighting the community's strong disapproval of the project.
