NEW DELHI, Jan. 15 -- Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has said that from 15 January 2021 only hallmarked jewelery and artifacts made of 14, 18 and 22 carat gold will be sold. Violation of this rule will attract a fine and can also lead to imprisonment for one year. Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said this on Tuesday.

Paswan said that one year has been given to the jewelery vendors for registration and mandatory hallmarking arrangements in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). A notification regarding this rule will be issued on 16 January. In the notification, there will be a provision for mandatory hallmarking of gold jewelery from January 15, 2021.
