INDIA, Dec. 4 -- The Ministry of Home Affairs has denied that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be implemented on religious grounds. In a written reply in Parliament, the MHA clarified that no funds have been kept aside for the implementation of the NRC on religious lines. The admission by the home ministry came a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP saying the NRC was a "political rhetoric" of the BJP. "We will not allow the National Register of Citizens (NRC), it will never happen in West Bengal. You cannot implement the NRC on the basis of caste and religion," Banerjee told reporters on Tuesday.
