New Delhi, Nov. 23 -- On November 6, the United States Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned Gebran Bassil, the President of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) political party and Member of Parliament (MP), over charges of alleged corruption in Lebanon and linkages with the Iran-backed Shi'ite Hezbollah, which the US regards as a terrorist group. Bassil has been sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act which targets corruption and serious human rights abuse around the world. Individuals targeted by Magnitsky sanctions face seizure of property and financial assets, investigations into associated companies, entities and individuals and a ban on entering the US.
