New Delhi, Jan. 9 -- Dozens of people gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in the South African capital Thursday to protest the U.S. intervention in Venezuela and the capture of former president Nicolas Maduro.

The protests were led by members of the South African Communist Party, an ally of the African National Congress, which has denounced U.S President Donald Trump's actions and called for Maduro's immediate release.

The demonstrators gathered outside the U.S Embassy in Pretoria with placards condemning Trump's administration and alleged U.S. intentions to take over Venezuela's oil reserves.

Some of the placards read "Hands Off Venezuela", "Free President Maduro Now" and "End American Imperialism."
