New Delhi, July 6 -- The day marks the birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi on Monday, July 6, paid homage to the devout patriot and said that he made courageous efforts to further India's unity.

Born on July 6, 1901, in Calcutta, Mookerjee served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet, which he later resigned from. With the assistance of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1951.
