New Delhi, June 26 -- "Universities are autonomous bodies and any decision to teach any particular subject is up to them. There is no compulsion," said UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain on Wednesday in the wake of the statements that have evolved allegations from Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU), saying the university is trying to impose Hindi, making it a mandatory subject at the undergraduate B. A. and B. Tech. courses.

Jain said that the letter advanced to universities in October 2018 was just to propose the teaching of Hindi in universities to seek suggestions and not making it a compulsory subject.
