New Delhi, Nov. 18 -- Over its increased activities of violence and other anti-India programmes, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), the Meghalaya-based insurgent group has been banned by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

As per the concerned Ministry, the insurgent group is also engaged in intimidating civilians to extort funds. Also, it is in contact with other insurgent groups based in the Northeast.

In a notification released by the MHA, the Ministry said, "The HNLC along with all its factions, wings and frontal organisations has been banned for their involvement in activities aimed at breaking away those parts of Meghalaya which are inhabited by Khasi and Jaintia tribals, from India."
