New Delhi, April 17 -- Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is set to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI). On April 16, current CJI Sanjiv Khanna officially recommended Justice Gavai, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.

Justice B. R. Gavai was born on 24th November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra. He enrolled as an advocate on 16th March 1985 and began his legal career working with the late Bar. Raja S. Bhonsale, former Advocate General and Judge of the High Court, until 1987. From 1987 to 1990, he practiced independently at the Bombay High Court and thereafter primarily at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court.
