In August 2020, reports surfaced that a relatively unknown American company, Delta Crescent Energy, signed a deal with the Syrian Kurdish authorities to modernise the Rumeilan, Tel Hamees and Tel Brak oil fields. The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, confirmed that the White House endorsed the deal in a Senate hearing on August 3. Pompeo affirmed his support for the agreement and his remarks stating, "the deal took a little longer than we had hoped," suggested that the US State Department had played a key role in arranging it.
