New Delhi, Jan. 16 -- The construction of the new Parliament building under the Central Vista Redevelopment Project commenced on January 15. The construction begins a month after PM Modi had laid the foundation stone for the project, on 10 December.

The project is expected to cost around Rs.200 billion (US$2.8 billion) and to be fully completed by 2024. A new triangular parliament building to be built besides, the existing structure is the first building to be developed under the project. The new structure will have an area of 64,500 sq ft (5,990 m2) and 4 floors and will hold 150% more seating capacity as India aims to expand its parliament in 2026.
