New Delhi, Feb. 28 -- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee Harsh Mahajan emerged victorious in the Rajya Sabha polls in Himachal Pradesh defeating the Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

The BJP candidate won the seat after a draw of lots after he and Manu Singhvi were tied at 34 votes each as six Congress MLAs and three independent MLAs who were previously backing the Congress led Himachal government supported the BJP candidate.

35 votes were needed to win the seat.

This result also means that the future of Congress government in Himachal Pradesh also looks uncertain as it was unable to cross the majority mark of 35 in the 68 member house.
