New Delhi, May 16 -- In the wake of the nationwide lockdown put in place to contain the spread of the novel Coronavirus, the Allahabad Court, on Friday, May 15, allowed recitation of azan (prayer) by a single individual in Uttar Pradesh mosques and not through loudspeakers.

"Azan may be an essential and integral part of Islam but its recitation through loudspeakers or other sound amplifying devices cannot be said to be an integral part of the religion," said the bench comprising Justices Shashi Kant Gupta and Ajit Kumar, granting relief to the Muslim Community.
