NEW DELHI, Sept. 25 -- On 8 September, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body that hands out the Oscars, announced a new set of diversity rules. These were part of its Academy Aperture 2025 initiative, "designed to encourage equitable representation on and off screen in order to better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience". They will come into effect at the 96th Oscars in 2024. A film will have to fulfil these criteria to be eligible for a Best Picture nomination.

There are four broad "standards", two of which have to be met by the film. Each standard, in turn, can be met by fulfilling one or two sub-categories.
