NEW DELHI, Dec. 13 -- India's criminal justice system may soon witness an overhaul with the Centre asking states to identify gaps in criminal laws, in the wake of a rise in the number of rape cases being reported.

The Union home ministry, which has begun the process to revamp the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), is now looking into criminal laws, which will not just address crimes such as mob lynching, but will also look at fast-tracking justice.

The home ministry's move is in line with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announcing earlier this year that it was working to revamp its crime manual, which would address lacunae in its investigation and thus smoothen the investigation procedure.
