TURA, Oct. 22 -- A recent case of a non tribal person changing his surname to that of tribal has not gone down well with many with the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) calling the same against the law.The NGO referred to the verdict of the Supreme Counrt of India which had disallowed such happenings and questioned the concerned authorities over allowing people from other castes and communities taking up tribal surnames (Sangma, Arengh, Shira, Marak, Momin). The NGO termed the wilful allowing of such changes despite the knowledge of authorities as contempt of Court.

A memo to this effect was submitted to the deputy commissioner of South West Garo Hills, Ram Kumar on the matter.
