Kuala Lampur, Feb. 16 -- Pritam Singh, the leader of Singapore's opposition Workers' Party, has been convicted of lying under oath to a parliamentary committee.

The charges stem from Singh's involvement in handling a false claim made by Raeesah Khan, a former party member, who lied in parliament in a separate incident, according to a BBC report published today.

This verdict comes as Singapore prepares for its next general election, which must be held by November.

The Workers' Party currently holds nine out of 87 elected seats in parliament.

Under Singaporean law, MPs who are fined over S$10,000 (RM33,000) or imprisoned for more than a year can lose their seat or be barred from running for office for five years.
