KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 8 -- The Marine Department of Malaysia (JLM) has confirmed that no hazardous or toxic gas was released following an explosion and fire aboard the Malta-registered container ship KYPARISSIA at Wharf 4 of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, yesterday afternoon.

JLM said in a statement that preliminary investigations found the fire originated from one of the containers while the vessel was en route from PTP to Lome, Togo.

"Following the incident, the vessel turned back to PTP (Wharf 4) to seek emergency assistance and undergo further inspection," it said.

The incident claimed three lives, while three others were injured and sent to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
