KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 8 -- A food court trader near Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium in Kota Bharu learned the hard way that even a helping hand for smokers can be costly.

Buletin TV3 reported that the 42-year-old was issued aRM250 compound for hanging a lighter in his stall for customers yesterday.

"I thought only smoking in eateries or displaying cigarettes was an offence," he reportedly said.

"I hung the lighter because visitors kept asking to borrow it without buying anything.

"I never imagined it would be illegal."

The compound was issued during last night's Operasi Selamat Paru-Paru(Ops Selamat PaPa), part of the full enforcement of the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations for Public Health 2024 (Act 852).
