Thought to have originated in Phetchaburi province of Thailand, khao chae was introduced to the royal court by Chao Chom Manda Sonklin, a noblewoman of Mon descent. During a palace visit, she shared her knowledge of the dish with the royal kitchen staff, giving rise to khao chae chao wang.
