New Delhi, July 18 -- India's wind energy sector has urged the government to implement a phased approach for localising critical wind turbine components, as the industry works to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce import dependence.

According to the Indian Wind Power Association (IWPA) and Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), local manufacturing currently covers up to 80% of turbine components.

However, essential parts such as permanent magnets, bearings, and converters still need to be imported, mainly from China and Europe.

The wind industry has welcomed the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's (MNRE) draft quality control order (QCO) for turbine components.
