New Delhi, March 19 -- The Union government is expected to introduce a subsidy scheme soon for installing turtle excluder devices (TEDs) in fishing nets.
This initiative aims to boost India's seafood industry, which suffered a significant setback when the US imposed a ban on wild-caught shrimp imports six years ago due to concerns over accidental turtle netting.
Sources within the seafood industry revealed on Tuesday (March 18) at a fisheries business meet organised by the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) that the Union ministry has strongly indicated support for the subsidy.
