Afghanistan, Sept. 7 -- Strong winds have fueled fresh wildfires in Portugal and Spain, prompting evacuations, road closures, and mass firefighting operations as authorities scramble to protect vulnerable communities.

In Portugal, the largest blaze broke out near the central city of Seia. More than 600 firefighters and several aircraft were deployed to contain the spreading flames.

Authorities stressed that protecting homes remained the top priority. Police later confirmed the arrest of a suspect accused of deliberately starting one of the wildfires.

Across the border in Spain, officials ordered the evacuation of the small village of Castromil in the northwest. Residents were moved as a precaution while roads were closed.
