Afghanistan, April 11 -- WHO reports nine new polio cases in Afghanistan over the past four months, raising concerns about virus resurgence and vaccination gaps.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported at least nine new cases of polio in Afghanistan and 71 in Pakistan over the past four months.

In a report released on Thursday, April 10, WHO stated that this fourfold increase has raised serious concerns about the spread of a more dangerous strain of the poliovirus in the region.

According to the report, the poliovirus has been primarily detected in southern Afghanistan, a region where door-to-door polio vaccination campaigns have not been conducted in the past year.
