Afghanistan, Aug. 21 -- UNICEF has urged that Afghan migrant returns be safe, voluntary, and dignified, following a Herat crash that killed 80 people, including 19 children.
UNICEF has renewed its call for Afghan migrant returns to be safe, dignified, voluntary, and gradual following a deadly traffic accident in Herat province.
Sanjay Wijesekera, UNICEF's Regional Director for South Asia, said on Thursday, August 21, that the recent tragedy underscores the urgent need to prioritize migrant safety.
He noted that only weeks earlier he had visited the Islam Qala border crossing, where he met Afghan children and families who appeared "shaken and traumatized, yet hopeful."
