Afghanistan, Aug. 1 -- Nearly 1.2 million Afghans have returned from Pakistan since September 2023, UNHCR reports, warning many face dire conditions and urging urgent aid to prevent a worsening humanitarian crisis.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says nearly 1.2 million Afghan migrants have returned from Pakistan between September 15, 2023, and June 30, 2025.

According to its report released Thursday, more than 156,000 returnees, including 98,000 registered cardholders, have received humanitarian assistance since crossing back into Afghanistan.

UNHCR said women and girls make up about half of those receiving aid, while roughly 2.2 percent of all returnees are people with disabilities.
