Afghanistan, Sept. 8 -- The United Nations has urged equal education for girls in Afghanistan on International Literacy Day, warning that continued restrictions threaten human rights, development, and the country's future.

Roza Otunbayeva, head of the UN mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), marked International Literacy Day by urging universal access to education, with particular focus on Afghan women and girls.

Speaking in Kabul on Monday, Otunbayeva said books are not only sources of knowledge but also a path to sustainable well-being, stressing equal access is vital for Afghanistan's future.
