Afghanistan, Dec. 19 -- The United Nations says 2.17 million Afghans have been forced back from Iran and Pakistan, with children comprising over 60 percent of returnees nationwide crisis.

Afghanistan is facing one of the world's largest displacement and returnee crises, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as millions of Afghans are forced back from neighboring countries amid worsening humanitarian conditions.

UNDP data shows that by 9 October 2025, approximately 2.17 million Afghan nationals had returned from Iran and Pakistan. Alarmingly, more than 60 percent of the returnees are children, placing immense pressure on child protection systems, education, and healthcare.
