U.S. judicial authorities have sentenced an Afghan national to 15 years in prison for plotting an attack linked to the 2024 U.S. election, officials said on Sunday.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Abdullah Hajizadeh was convicted of planning to acquire firearms on behalf of the Islamic State group, following a counterterrorism investigation.

Prosecutors said the plot was disrupted before it could be carried out, stressing that coordinated intelligence and law enforcement actions prevented any immediate threat to public safety.
