Afghanistan, Nov. 3 -- Two children were among at least eight people killed after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Balkh province late Sunday, leaving widespread destruction across northern Afghanistan.

Local officials said the children died in Shulgar district when their house collapsed during the tremor. Residents spent the night digging through rubble to rescue trapped survivors.

In Khulm district, six additional deaths and more than 75 injuries were reported, while hospitals in Mazar-e-Sharif struggled to treat the wounded as aftershocks rattled the area.

The quake also damaged parts of the historic shrine in Mazar-e-Sharif, one of Afghanistan's most iconic landmarks, sparking calls for urgent preservation efforts.
