Afghanistan, Feb. 4 -- Syrian interim President Ahmad Sharaa, in an interview with The Economist, spoke about forming a national unity government and holding free and fair elections. He expressed hope that with UN cooperation, a new constitution could be drafted within four years.

During his discussion in Damascus, Sharaa emphasized that his government appointments would be based on merit rather than ethnicity or religion. He suggested that, for the first time, non-Sunni individuals could be included in key government positions.

Sharaa criticized the U.S. military presence in Syria as "illegal" but acknowledged Donald Trump's efforts toward peace in the region. He also hinted at the possibility of restoring diplomatic ties with Washington...
