Afghanistan, Jan. 29 -- Local authorities in Uttar Pradesh, India, announced on Wednesday that several people lost their lives in a stampede during the religious festival Maha Kumbh in the city of Allahabad.
Reuters reported that the death toll exceeds seven, while some Indian media sources claimed that at least ten people have died in the incident.
A local official, speaking anonymously to Reuters, stated, "More than seven people were killed in the stampede, and about ten others were injured."
According to local officials, the tragedy occurred around 1:00 AM on Thursday, when thousands of devotees rushed toward the river to perform a sacred ritual of the Kumbh Mela festival.
