Afghanistan, Dec. 25 -- At least seven people were killed in a mosque blast in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, according to officials and eyewitnesses.

The explosion occurred on Wednesday evening, December 24, during evening prayers, when worshippers were inside the mosque, AFP reported citing local sources.

Reports indicate the bomb was planted inside the mosque, targeting congregants. While one mosque official cited eight fatalities, security sources have confirmed at least seven deaths.

Boko Haram and its splinter groups, including ISIS-affiliated factions, have been active in Maiduguri and northeastern Nigeria for years, frequently targeting civilians, religious institutions, and public places.
