Afghanistan, April 21 -- Pope Francis, the leader of the world's Catholics, passed away today at the age of 88, the Vatican has confirmed.

In an official statement, Cardinal Kevin Farrell said, "Dear brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis."

According to the Vatican's announcement, Pope Francis passed away at 7:35 a.m. local time at his residence, Casa Santa Marta, in his role as Bishop of Rome.
