Afghanistan, Feb. 21 -- At least 50 people were killed after gunmen attacked a village in northern Nigeria's Zamfara state, amid a surge in insecurity across the region.

According to Reuters, the assault began Thursday evening in the village of Tungan Dutsi in the Bukkuyum area and continued into early Friday.

Attackers reportedly set homes ablaze and opened fire on residents attempting to flee, causing heavy casualties and abducting several women and children.

Hamisu A. Faru, a lawmaker representing Bukkuyum South in the Zamfara state assembly, confirmed that at least 50 deaths had been recorded, adding that the gunmen moved from village to village during the attack.
