Afghanistan, March 11 -- South Korea's military has reported that North Korea fired several ballistic missiles into the sea as South Korea and the United States began their annual joint military drills.

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warned last week against further "provocative" actions in response to the deployment of a U.S. aircraft carrier in South Korea.

According to Reuters, South Korea's military confirmed on Monday, March 10, that the missiles were launched from western North Korea and fired towards the Yellow Sea.

A South Korean Defense Ministry official noted that the missiles, which had a range of less than 300 kilometers, are believed to be short-range ballistic missiles.
